From Microchip the USB5734 is a 3.0 compliant (also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1) and supports all the defined USB speeds up to the 5 Gbps SuperSpeed (SS) data rate on all enabled downstream ports. The device integrates a USB 2.0 controller to decouple SuperSpeed data from slower USB 2.0 traffic to avoid bottlenecks slower USB 2.0 traffic can create.
The USB5734 integrates functions that would typically be associated with a separate MCU or processor; as such Microchip classifies this device as a Smart Hub. For example the device can communicate to peripherals via I2C, SPI, GPIOs or UART in addition to USB. Also a downstream device can take control of the host system by swapping roles to become the host port, with the Smart Hub switching between two different hosts if required.
